Girl Bartender: Does Male or Female Make a Difference

There is an ongoing debate in the world of bartending on whether being male or female makes a difference behind the bar. It does, but mainly for the bar owner more than the actual bartender. For the bartender the only thing that really matters is their skill level.

This is the myth behind hiring a good looking girl bartender: You get more guys into the bar because they want to see the girl behind the bar. Why is this a myth? It is a myth because if you do a ladies night you accomplish the same thing. If you have a guy behind the bar and it brought in the girl customers the guy customers would follow.

In order to make money as a bar owner you really just need honest and talented bartenders that will sell you drinks. This is better than incompetent good looking bartenders any day. Now I am not saying that a good looking woman cannot be a good bartender. I have met plenty that are, but more often than not that is not the case.

The other thing you get with a hot female bartender is guys hitting on her all the time. This makes it harder for her to do her job and easier for her to be distracted. Plus once a guy gets a crush and asks her out he will never come back when she rejects him. It is just not the best way to go.

I recommend judging bartender specifically on their speed and their bartending skill. If they happen to be female and hot that is fine, but if not hire them anyway. As a bartender you need to understand that your skills should and will get you good jobs. Keep learning and you will become a highly skilled bartender that every bar needs.
